It would be a simple matter to dismiss Eleazar Williams and his supporters as either outright frauds or, more charitably, as simply sadly deluded. Most, although by no means all, historians have done just that. Williams, the cautious scholars insist, was most assuredly not Prince Louis Charles, the Dauphin of France, the youngster who, if the French Revolution had not violently interrupted Bourbon rule, would one day have become King Louis XVII of France.
The principal problem with so ready a dismissal of that claim, however, is that Eleazar Williams possibly was the only son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and the lineal heir to the throne. That, at least, is the view expressed by Jacob I. Hotchkiss in a 1964 research monograph prepared for the Albany Institute of History and Art. In that paper Hotchkiss wrote that, ¡°There is at least a strong possibility that Williams . . . was, in reality, the Dauphin of France. . . .¡±
Whatever the truth of the matter, the events in Paris in the 1790s provide Albany, New York, with one of its oddest historical footnotes. While it is most widely believed that the ten-year-old Dauphin died in his Parisian prison in the summer of 1795, the fact of the boy¡¯s death has never been demonstrated conclusively. Some serious researchers, including Hotchkiss, have cited ¡°a large amount of circumstantial evidence¡± that the prince was smuggled out of France during the spring of that year, his place in prison having been filled by a dying boy of like age and appearance.
